The campus community is invited to attend a ceremonial dedication at 11 a.m. Oct. 14 to rename Residence Hall C in honor of alumni Ivan ’41 and Adelaide ’38 Guesman of Jefferson Borough, Greene County.

The University’s Council of Trustees approved the change at a special meeting held Sept. 27, 2013. The building will be known as Ivan H. and Adelaide Ivill Guesman Hall.

Both Ivan and Adelaide Guesman dedicated their careers to excellence in education.

  • He was an elementary-school teacher and a school district superintendent before joining the faculty at California State College, where he taught in the Department of Education from 1968-1981. He also was an active member and past president of the Emeriti Faculty Association.
  • She enjoyed a rewarding career as a high school teacher, retiring after 35 years in the Jefferson Morgan schools.

The Guesmans are generous benefactors who have established scholarships to benefit Cal U students, contributed to University fundraising events and funded one of the guest rooms in the Kara Alumni House, which was dedicated in honor of their parents.

They also are known for their philanthropy in Greene County, where they have contributed to projects at Waynesburg University, Southwest Regional Medical Center and Hewitt Presbyterian Church, where they were married in 1943.

In 2008 the Guesmans received honorary doctorates from Cal U, the first couple in the University’s history to be so honored.

They have received awards from the Cal U Alumni Association and the Foundation for California University; in June the University awarded them the Lillian M. Bassi Core Values Award, one of its highest honors.

“Ivan and Adelaide Guesman truly embody our University’s core values of integrity, civility and responsibility,” said interim University President Geraldine M. Jones.

“As alumni, Adelaide and Ivan are wonderful role models, in terms of both their careers and their exemplary service to others, including their alma mater. I am proud to have our University associated with this remarkable couple, and I am pleased to know that their names will become a permanent part of our campus landscape.”
